Who We Are

At Hansen, we have transformed what it means to be a “developer.” We are developers of ideas, culture and community. From our start in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood, where we remain deeply rooted today, to a diverse portfolio across the city, we’ve always believed that a space is about more than buildings. It’s about creating environments that people are drawn to, stewarding places that last, and developing ventures that move business and community forward.

Our History

Hansen’s story began in 1971, when John Hansen founded the firm to create quality office space during Houston’s oil boom. His focus was simple: deliver lasting projects that elevated their surroundings. With a sharp eye for design, landscaping, and the feel of a place, he helped shape Montrose into one of Houston’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

In 1998, John Andell joined the company, sharing the same beliefs and passion as its founder. Upon earning a MBA at Rice, Andell assumed the CEO role and, in 2013, full ownership. Under his leadership, Andell has evolved the company beyond real estate, building an enterprise focused on ventures, innovation and the human experience of place.

John Andell joined Hansen

1999

First landmark project: Savage Design Building, 4203 Yoakum Boulevard in Montrose / Museum District

2004

4119 Montrose Boulevard completed

2008

4203 Montrose Boulevard completed

2013

Andell assumed ownership of the company and named it Hansen

2014

4306 Yoakum Boulevard completed

2017

3773 Richmond Avenue in Greenway Plaza completed

2018

Took on 450,000 sq ft. of additional management

2019

Launched Nexus Houston & Bridge City Innovation

2024

Launched HansenLabs.io.
